MICHIGAN – Today, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed suit against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Mutual Insurance Company (BCBSM), challenging the company’s unlawful monopoly that has stifled competition, driven up health care costs and lowered the quality of care for Michiganders.
Following the announcement, Christy McGillivray, Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Steering Committee, released the following statement:
“No corporation should be too powerful to evade accountability. We applaud Attorney General Nessel for making Blue Cross Blue Shield answer for their illegal monopoly that has taken money out of Michiganders’ wallets time and again, while reducing their access to quality affordable healthcare at the same time.
When Blue Cross Blue Shield repeatedly buys off our politicians – flooding nearly $900,000 into this election cycle alone – while holding a $17 billion contract with the state, it’s no surprise that the company has run away with unchecked power to raise rates for years, all while hardworking Michiganders pay the price.
This November, Michiganders’ moment is here to vote yes on Prop 2 and finally put a stop to the corrupt pay-to-play system that has put greedy corporations ahead of Michigan families for far too long.”
Background Information:
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is the state of Michigan’s biggest contractor, holding $17.7 billion in contracts. In this election cycle alone, they have donated almost $900,000 to state candidates and political committees.
Proposal 2 would ban Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from contributing to state candidates, reining in their outsized influence over Michigan politics.
