GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Statewide candidates in Michigan for offices like governor and its open U.S. Senate seat have gotten a lot of attention in this premier battleground state’s highly-watched midterm elections.
Candidates will also be vying for posts like secretary of state, attorney general, two seats on the Michigan Supreme Court and seats on university boards and the Michigan State Board of Education.
But there’s much more Michiganders can expect to vote on as the state has solidified its November ballot.

Statewide Proposal 2 – ‘Michiganders for Money Out of Politics’
Proposal 2 is what’s been called the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics proposal, or MMOP. This question will ask voters whether to change state law and bar gas and electric utilities and certain contractors with state business from making many types of political contributions. That would be in addition to changes surrounding certain political ads and who pays for them.
The effort survived a legal challenge just last week before the Michigan Supreme Court, and some have felt it would do away with a form of free speech.
Supporters, however, have seen it differently.
“This is about who government is responsive to. Is it corporations or the Michiganders that elected them?
A third potential ballot proposal from Americans for Citizen Voting Michigan, which would have required citizenship verification for voting and valid photo ID for in-person ballots to count, will be left off the ballot after a key state board deadlocked on whether to certify it and courts later declined to force state officials to put it to voters.
