Michigan voters to decide on 2 state proposals in November election

LANSING — Michigan voters are days away from receiving their absentee ballots for November’s midterm election.

In addition to closely watched races for governor and the U.S. Senate, two questions, including potential changes to the Michigan Constitution, are on the ballot.

Proposal 2 is also known as the “Money out of Politics” initiative, which would ban Michigan utility companies and big state contractors from making political contributions.

“It’s going to ban corporations that have large state or local government contracts of more than $250,000 from contributing to candidates for state or local office where those contracts are held,” said Christy McGillivray, co-chair of the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Executive Committee.

The campaign says that companies like Consumers Energy and DTE hold unfair influence over state lawmakers with political spending.

The Energy and Policy Institute found that more than half of Michigan lawmakers currently accept donations from the utilities.

“The reason why we took on this ballot initiative is because of the fact that massive corporations and our gas and electric utilities buy out both parties, and the result is that voters across the state suffer,” McGillivray said.
