STATEMENT: Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Warns Supreme Court Ruling Will Flood Michigan Elections with Even More Big Money, Emphasizes Urgent Need for Ballot Proposal

MICHIGAN – Following the Supreme Court’s decision today in NRSC v. FEC, striking down federal limits on how much political parties can spend in coordination with their candidates, Sean McBrearty, Co-Chair of the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Executive Board, released the following statement:

“With today’s Supreme Court decision, there is no doubt we will see millions more dollars unleashed into our broken campaign finance system – exacerbating the very crisis the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics initiative was created to combat.

Let’s be clear – this campaign is one of the only efforts in the nation right now seeking to rein in our out-of-control political spending. For too long, the invasion of corporate greed and the big-dollar donors in our politics have been drowning out the voices of everyday people.

As even more money floods into our elections, now is the time for voters to say enough is enough and pass this proposal to put a check on the Wild West of political spending in our state and strengthen disclosure requirements so voters know where political donations are coming from and who exactly is bankrolling the ads they see.

Now more than ever, it’s essential Michiganders have the chance to make their voices heard loud and clear and vote yes on the MMOP initiative this November.”
