MICHIGAN – Today, the UAW announced its official endorsement of the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) ballot initiative, Proposal 2. The union is urging all members and union households to vote yes on Proposal 2 to fight back against corporate greed and corrupt pay-to-play politics in Lansing.
“Nothing has shaped the current corrupt state of our government like the rise of corporate money and influence,” said UAW President Shawn Fain in announcing the Union’s endorsement of Proposal 2. “Billionaires and corporations are pouring billions of dollars into our elections in America this year alone. They do it to rig the system in their favor, and working-class families pay the price. We’re done with a system that allows corporate greed to dictate our politics. That’s why the UAW endorses a Yes vote on Proposal 2, Michigan Money Out of Politics. This initiative would at least stop a monopoly utility company like DTE from owning elected officials in Lansing, so our elected officials are accountable to the people, not a corporate checkbook.”
The UAW’s endorsement continues the campaign’s growing momentum across the state. Earlier this month, new Detroit News-WDIV-TV (Channel 4) polling and new Progress Michigan polling showed overwhelming support across party lines for the MMOP ballot proposal, at 71.5% and 80% supporting Proposal 2 respectively.
“For too long, working people have been left behind by politicians in Lansing, while corporations have only gotten richer and richer thanks to our state’s corrupt, corporate pay-to-play political system. That’s why we’re proud to have the UAW and its members standing with us in this fight to ensure our government works for us, not corporate donors,” said Ken Whittaker, Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Executive Committee Member. “In the final weeks to Election Day, we’re continuing to mobilize this ever-growing people-powered movement to pass Proposal 2 this November and end the influence of corporate greed in our politics.”

The Michiganders for Money Out of Politics campaign is a citizen-led ballot initiative that would ban political contributions from regulated monopoly utilities, such as DTE and Consumers Energy, as well as corporations that seek or hold large state and local government contracts like Blue Cross Blue Shield. The initiative would also close the dark money “issue ad loophole” and modernize Michigan’s campaign finance disclosure requirements.
