LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A group pushing to get corporate money out of Michigan politics said it has the signatures to put the issue on the ballot.
The “MOP UP Michigan” campaign turned in more than 562,000 petition signatures to the Secretary of State’s office today.
The group, Michiganders for Money Out of Politics, said Wednesday its citizen-led initiative would ban political contributions from some of Michigan’s largest corporations like powerful utilities and insurance companies.
The ballot initiative would also tighten disclosure rules, not allowing so-called “dark money” to hide in state elections.
Leaders of the effort said they are not just going after corporate political action committees.
“The 501c4s where legislators are instructed to put the money that they don’t want their constituents to hear about,” said Christy McGillivray, co-chair of Michiganders for Money Out of Politics. “I have had legislators tell me over and over again that they are instructed on how to set up a 501c4 to take dirty money, so no one finds out about it.”
The MOP UP Michigan campaign said it collected signatures with help of more than 1,200 volunteers. The Board of State Canvassers has to approve the petitions before the initiative can land on the ballot.
